May 2010

Spring isn't just about flowers; it brings a lot of animals out of the woodwork (or would that be the woods?). By 4:00 AM, the birds are already chatting up a storm, there are squirrels running relay races up and down the trees, and all you have to do is watch the news to find out there's a bear in a tree or a moose on someone's car (for real!). So, it didn't surprise me at all when my friend Sharon told me that a couple of raccoons got into her recycling bin last night. She heard the commotion, looked out of her bedroom window, and saw the pair running across her yard. She was way too tired to check out the damage in the middle of the night (and a little scared). She didn't know what she would find in the morning, but she stepped outside, bracing herself for chaos. She was very surprised to see that they didn't create the mess she was dreading - all they did was grab two plastic plates and a juice container and bring them up on her deck! And here's where it gets even odder - they left her a half eaten roll. Did they just visit for a midnight snack? Were they leaving her breakfast? I guess she'll never know for sure, but she sat out on her deck for a while, just in case the next course was coming. Hey, she was hungry!

Send us an email and let us know what's up this spring in your neck of the woods...

February 2010

February is a mixed bag, don't you think? All that chocolate everywhere, and a world of pink is a girl's dream come true. But all the cheesy, smoochie, lovey-dovey stuff takes something away from how perfect V-Day could be if it was just about sweets doesn't it? Sure, the lovers out there get a kick out of it – and we say more power to them! But for all the girls out there who want to take the awkwardness out of the day and make it awesome again, take back V-Day! That's we we did here. All the girls in the office enjoyed delicious pink cupcakes, we made each other (silly, silly, silly) handmade cards, and exchanged secret gifts (under $5, and they were all adorable!). I went from a girl who was dreading V-day this year to a girl who wished it was V-day every week — I want more cupcakes! : ) There are a lot of times/situations that aren't always comfortable, but there are always ways to turn them into fun. It's just a matter of attitude and making it happen.

January 2010

Everyone around the office started out with resolutions, but 3/4 through January only one of us has stayed committed to hers. The strange thing about this is that we all made resolutions about things we actually WANTED to change. No one was forcing an idea on us, and we were all excited to start our resolutions. So what's the deal? I can speak for myself when I say that I was overzealous. My resolution was not very realistic. One of our photographers stated she would drink 8 glasses of water a day. But three days later a photoshoot ate up most of her time that day, and she completely couldn't keep up. Everyone else had similar experiences — for one reason or another they failed at something they genuinely wanted to be committed to. If this is something you relate to, do not be discouraged. The fact is that it's good to have goals. We may fail at them. Heck we may fail at them 100 times before we are ever successful. But the point is that we can't ever be successful if we don't try...and sometimes that means we have to keep trying. So if you are one of the many girls who needs to start her resolutions over again, please do. But, make some adjustments so that it becomes something attainable. Make it realistic, have a plan to get you there one step at a time, etc. But whatever you do, don't give up. Success is much sweeter when the journey to get you there was difficult. Keep us posted on your journey! We love hearing from you!

October 2009

The leaves are falling... there are pumpkins on the doorsteps and in the windows, and candy corn is everywhere! Yay! I just found out that October 30th is National Candy Corn Day (like seriously, who knew?!). And get this — rumor has it that Americans eat so much candy corn each year, that if we laid out the kernels — touching end to end — they would circle the earth 4.5 times. Pretty sweet, huh?

September 2009

Okay, how many times have you heard someone say he or she can't believe that summer is over already? I know, played out, but IT'S SO TRUE. A bunch of us were hanging out at our SIX7*8th office yesterday, and it was so weird to see school buses out the window. Then Marina got a text from her sister (who is in eighth grade). Her sister is back at school and was really mad because she had been hanging out with Brittany before homeroom. Well, Marina's sister - let's just call her Tina - thought things were cool with Brittany. But later, Tina's friend, Sarah, told her that Brittany was telling everyone that Tina was writing stuff on the bathroom walls! Seriously? Tina would never! And the fact that Brittany would go there? Why? So Tina found Brittany outside at recess and asked her what was up. She just looked her right in the eye and said, "Why are you spreading rumors about me? You know I would never write on the walls!" Brittany got all embarrassed and said, "I never said you wrote the stuff; I just said it looked like your handwriting... and that MAYBE you wrote it." Tina looked at Brittany and said, "You know what? You need to stop spreading rumors and worry more about yourself. This is ridiculous." And she just went on with her day, and her classes, and her friends. We all raised our bottled waters to Tina - for breaking the drama chain and just dealing with the one person who was spreading rumors. Go, Tina! It can be really hard not to react with a lot of emotion and anger when you find out someone has been talking behind your back. But it is definitely cooler to just ask him or her what the deal is, and then move on to the important stuff... your classes, friends, teachers, sports, crushes. Can you believe we are even having this conversation? B-T-S?? And WDTSG (Where Did The Summer Go)?! New classes, new grades! Good luck!!

July 2009

Someone around here has a crush on a guy and she wont admit it!! The girls in our office know something is up with her, but we can't get it out of her. She is my BFFs so I can't understand why should would not share with me!! No fair!!! I thought there was no way it was a crush, because she would normally come running to me at the first sight of a cute guy. I would totally have planned a girls' night at my house the same night to get all the details, make a list of his good and bad traits, rate his cuteness, and tell her if he is a good dresser or not. Then it hit me...she probably isn't telling me because she doesn't want my feedback. That doesn't make any sense to me!

I was sitting at my desk all day feeling kind of hurt that she wouldn't trust me. As I was about to email her, she crept up behind me. "Can we talk?" she asked. Before I could even answer she plopped on my desk and said, "Okay, okay it's true! I have the biggest crush ever! But I care about what you think so much that it would have broken my heart if you made fun of his clothes or didn't think he was cute, because I really really really like him. Plus, I don't know if he likes me back and if you thought he didn't I would give up instantly. I just want to enjoy this time, even if I get hurt or he ends up on a worst dressed list." At first I was surprised that she would think I would say bad stuff about him, but I had to get real with myself...that's what I do. Even if I don't intend for it to be mean, I can see how saying someone only has a 2 cute factor is mean if you care about him. After she wrapped up sharing how much our friendship meant to her I didn't have much to say but, "Sorry, I have been such a gossip and it made you question my support." I meant it.

If you ever find that someone doesn't want to share the scoop with you, think about why. Are you a friend that listens and can be trusted? Are you a friend that shows support? Or are you a friend that judges and makes fun? If you aren't sure, think about all the friends you have, how much they are willing to share with you, and you'll have your answer. If you find you need to make some changes, now is a great time to start. Summer is perfect for getting out and spending time with your girl buds. Listen more, and appreciate their thoughts and feelings- It's what makes us all unique and probably what drew you to them in the first place. Make summer a time to enjoy the sunshine, sand, warm winds and your friendships.

June 2009

Hahahahahaha!!! LOL! ROFL!! Have you ever laughed so hard you cried? Or have you ever laughed at the worst possible time (like in a room filled with people when you were supposed to be quiet) - and found that no matter what, there was no way to stop? The other day, I was out at a restaurant with a bunch of my friends. The server arrived at our table - she looked like she was about sixteen. "Hey!" she said. "Welcome! My name is Amy, and I'll be your s-s-s-s-erver." That's when she covered her face with her hands and started cracking up. I MEAN CRACKING UP. "OMG," she said (between gasps of laughter). "I am so sorry. I don't even know why I am laughing." But the more she tried to stop... the more she gasped for air and laughed so hard her body shook. "It's okay," my friend said, trying to comfort her (because despite all that laughing, Amy was clearly embarrassed). "I'll have a burger," my friend continued. As she started to write B-U-R-G-E-R on her little pad of paper, she snorted, laughed even harder, and doubled over. "It's my first day on the job," she whispered between shrieks of laughter. There she stood, red in the face, tears running down her cheeks; and one by one, my friends and I joined her in her laughing frenzy. Within five minutes, we were all laughing so hard, it hurt - like worse than abdominal crunches! And I still don't really know why. Do you ever wonder what's up with laughter? There are scientists who do - in fact, the study of laughter is called gelotology (sounds like Jell-O, and that's kind of funny), and scientists believe that laughter is good for our immune systems. It definitely leaves us feeling more relaxed (and even sends special chemicals into our bloodstreams). Anyway, eventually Amy calmed down enough to take our orders. When she returned with our food, however, we were too worked up to be serious about anything. Amy passed the burger platter to my friend and I said, "There's your burger." We lost it (Amy, too). I never knew how funny the word 'burger' could be. Now I think I'm scarred for life - like I'll never be able to order a burger anywhere, without dying of laughter. I guess it could be worse. Here's to gelotology! And can I interest you in a burger? Hahahahahahahhaa!!!!!

April 2009

If you live in a part of the country that disappointed you on the first day of spring, I don't blame you. I woke up to grumpy people in the house and a dark sky that made me want to crawl back into bed. The cold wind was pretty much like the day before. But for some crazy reason, I thought I was going to wake up to people skipping down the street and wild flowers in full bloom lining the sidewalks. I had noted the day on my calendar with the shape of a bright pink flower for Pete's sake! I would like to add that every day that led up to it was increasingly amazing, so I didn't think I was being unreasonable to expect a rainbow sprawled across the sky and a unicorn at the door delivering licorice in a cute purple basket. Was I being unreasonable? Well the morning might have not started out so great, but the afternoon was a little less depressing- I did experience the warm sun of my face, even if it was only for a few minutes. Then, while the sun waned and the winds slowly started to feel like they were biting my skin, I remembered that during a storm the week prior, I was begging for only five minutes of sun. "Just five minutes!" While I tried to bask in that short lived sunshine, it hit me that my expectations were the only thing that prevented me from enjoying the rest of the cloudy day. Sure, spring has started off slowly for many of us. But we still have so much to be grateful for! Be happy for the five minutes of sunshine peaking through the sky that didn't peak at all only weeks ago. Continue to expect the most out of everything and everyone. And remember to be grateful if they fall short because you will still have more than you started out with. Five minutes of sunshine and a single warm breeze may not seem like much for a spring day, but it's still pretty great when it's couple with great expectations that are flexible : )

Welcome to spring you awesome junior higher!

January 2009

Got Cookies?
Whoa! We just had a food fight — not exactly a flying pasta type of event, but still... a food fight. So it started like this: A bunch of us were in the SIX7*8th office, all kind of doing our own thing and working on projects. The intercom buzzed, and it was the delivery guy with a package. We LOVE packages, so we all stopped what we were doing to check it out. Turns out it was a huge cookie basket. OMG — this thing was amazing. It had really beautiful cookies on sticks, coming out of a basket, like flowers! I have never seen cookies this cool — not ever. The cookie in the middle was pretty drastic. It was super thick and coated in mega amounts of caramel and chocolate. "Dibbs on that queen cookie," I shouted — figuring sometimes you just have to be bold to get what you want. "Not a chance," laughed Olivia, our fashion director. Then before I knew it, Debbie and Tina from the back office were claiming it too. "No way," I said. "I totally called that." And I went for it... like a full out lunge, grab, gimme that cookie! Suddenly, there was Angie, pulling some superhero martial arts move and cutting me off. I am not exaggerating when I say in that split second ten of us were having a full out war for Queen Choco-Caramel! And us SIX7*8th girls? We are a determined bunch! Somehow, we all ended up in a mound on the floor laughing so hard we could barely breathe. Queen Choco-Caramel was more like a smashed up royal colony. So we sat on the floor, sharing the broken pieces from the basket — which I might add were the best cookie guts I've ever eaten — and talking about what we want for the New Year. Good times! I love these girls, and that is the way the cookie crumbles in our crazy office! Wishing you all a New Year filled with sweet times...

2008 Winter

Sometimes the pace around here is NUTS! We are making things happen. And speaking of things happening — we were doing a photo shoot the other day, and one of our staff members needed to make a phone call. So she hit up the first three numbers, which just happened to be 9-1-3... but she waited just a little too long on the #1 and the button went down again (she swears her phone is super-sensitive...hmm). BIG PROBLEM. She totally panicked — hit the disconnect super fast — and thought she was safe. Less than five minutes later, she sees flashing lights and all. The bell rang and there was a big police officer who wanted to know why she called 9-1-1. As if she wasn't horrified enough, out came the models from the photo shoot — let's see, there was a mad scientist, and a kid in a Scream mask, and a girl in her PJs... The police officer seemed pretty amused while she apologized nonstop and tried to explain that this wasn't as strange as it looked. Don't think she'll be making more phone calls any time soon. And that's probably a good thing, because we have work to do! TTYS...

2008 Summer

Summer is sure starting off with a bang around here! Before we ever launched the first issue, our staff had a list of all their favorite celebs we all hoped to someday interview. A few of those people were Amanda Bynes, The Jonas Brothers and Teddy Geiger. Well, the Jonas Brothers were happy to help us out shortly after we launched, and we've been in love with them ever since. It's probably why we can't seem to take their interview down from our website, lol. Amanda made our day when she agreed to be our beautiful cover girl back in March. And now Teddy is in our current issue sharing behind the scenes moments of his upcoming movie The Rocker. Cool right? Don't worry, just because we've scratched a few of our fave celebs off of our list doesn't mean we don't have a long list of awesome celebs in upcoming issues. In fact, we are working on HSM coverage now and getting gritty with new artists that we know will explode on the scenes soon. And since SIX7*8th is really about your lifestyle, we still have our fingers on the junior high pulse. The new issue hitting newsstands features what is up at Mannheim Middle School in Melrose Park, Illinois. We show you how other junior highers are livin' and cover everything you have been writing to us about. You wanted ideas on how to spend your summer, b2s fashion ideas, quizzes, dyi hair styles, and ways to prep for school next year. We gave you all of that and more. So while you flip through your new issue of SIX7*8th, we'll start working on ways to include your latest ideas. Enjoy your summer and keep us posted on all your fun!

2008 Spring

Spring again? Yahoo! The sunshine always puts us in a better mood. It's kind of hard to be in a bad mood when you're in shorts and tanks at family barbeques or listening to music with your BFF poolside.

As for SIX7*8th, we have been super busy- our May/June issue hit newsstands this week! The awesome Jen Steele is our cover girl. You'll love getting to know her just as much as we did. She's so down to earth and really taught us that we all have the power to make our dreams reality if we just work hard. Our fashion pages are filled with fun stuff to get you away from your bulky winter wardrobe. And, as usual, we have packed the pages with articles about friends, school, the environment, bad attitudes, embarrassing moments, beauty tips, and much more. Pick it up and let us know what you think. The YourSpace bulletin board might just have your letter posted in the next issue!

We also had a photo shoot yesterday for our upcoming Back-To-School issue. We tried to mix it up so we invited Ryan and Jeremy to be our first boy models ever. They were a blast to work with, and made our fashion pages really represent what junior high is like. The sun was blazing and we all had to pretend it wasn't in our eyes as our photographer, Terra, tried to get the right shots. It was fun, but a long and tiresome day. Thanks guys!

We gotta get back to work now. We hope you enjoy the new issue and can't wait to start reading your feedback. It's always so helpful because you girls always give us such great ideas! Enjoy the sun (don't forget to lather up on sunscreen!) and make every second of warm weather count!

Wednesday: 01.09.08

Friday: 11.13.07

Time flies! It's been a while since our last blog, but we haven't forgotten you. On the contrary— we've been brainstorming, traveling, writing, interviewing, designing, and even doing cartwheels (see our latest issue, just out on newsstands, and you'll understand what we mean). So many exciting pages are coming your way. We hope that school is going well, and that fall finds you working hard, playing hard, and finding some time to chill and laugh. Let us know what's happening in your life! And hey, speaking of that—send us a photo and a response (editor@six78th.com) to this question (with your parents' permission): If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why? You just might find yourself in the magazine! TTYS…

Friday: 08.03.07

Hope you are having a fantastic summer! We are loving ours, but we've also been working hard. Yet another issue of SIX7*8th is printing at this very moment. We're totally excited—make sure you grab a copy to find out how you can see yourself in an upcoming issue. All you need is a photo and a great idea! And in the meantime, make the most of summer. It may go too quickly, but it's perfect while it's here…TTYS!
